Herriot Street, George Town
Herriot Street is a short street within George Town's Seven Streets Precint (chit tiau lor in Penang Hokkien). It connects Brick Kiln Road to the west with Mcnair Street to the east.
Etymology[]
Herriot Street was named after Stuart Herriot, a British trader who lived in the 19th. century. Born in England in 1812, he moved to the Prince of Wales Island (as Penang Island was then known) in the 1830s and remained here until his death in the 1870s.

When a war erupted within the neighbouring Sultanate of Perak over the monopoly of tin mining there, Herriot, who was educated, wrote a petition on behalf of Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee to the British authorities, urging them to intervene in Perak. The ensuing British intervention in Perak led to the creation of the mining towns of Taiping and Kamunting.
