Lorong Kinta is a narrow one-way lane within the George Town city centre. It zig-zags from northeast to southwest, between Burmah Road to the north and Macalister Road to the south.
A cinema was built in the 1930s at the northern junction between Lorong Kinta and Burmah Road. Today, it has been converted into Mekio Home Furnishing, a furniture outlet.
In addition, a row of shophouses nearby has been converted into the Penang Furnishing City.
Etymology[]
Lorong Kinta was named after the Kinta Valley, a former tin-producing valley within the neighbouring Sultanate of Perak. Within the valley, the Kinta River flows through Ipoh, the capital city of Perak.
History[]
Lorong Kinta has been in existence since at least the early 20th. century.
The Art-Deco styled Rex theatre was constructed at the junction between Lorong Kinta and Burmah Road in the 1930s. Opened in 1939, the Rex was the first fully air-conditioned cinema on Penang Island. It was closed down in the 1980s, and after years of neglect, it has been converted into Mekio Home Furnishing.
Opposite the former theatre, a row of shophouses has also been converted into the Penang Furnishing City.
